Below is the Core Curriculum for the 1st Grade.
Language Arts
Listening and Speaking
- Listening and retelling simple stories
- Speaking, presenting orally in front of the class (show-n-tell)
- Recognizing beginning, middle and final consonant sounds and vowel sounds
- Listening attentively in large and small groups
- Participating effectively in Daily Oral Language (grammar concepts of oral language)
Reading and Literature
- Reading comprehension, drawing conclusions
- Explaining cause and effect, predicting outcomes and distinguishing between reality and fantasy
- Developing and continually expanding a sight word vocabulary
- Using phonics skills to decode (sound out) words
- Demonstrating an awarenesss of words with plural endings, simple contractions, compound words, rhyming words and root words
- Using a plan for applying reading strategies
Written Expression
- Using invented spelling to write complex words
- Developing and expanding skills using the writing process (draft, edit, finished copy)
- Forming letters properly (printing)
- Using appropriate spacing, capitalization, and punctuation
- Developing and improving spelling skills
Social Studies
- Understanding that environment influences the kinds of food, clothing, and shelter families may have
- Discussing the difference between wants and needs
- Developing an awareness of one's feelings towards others and of one's individuality

- Devleoping an understanding and awareness of rules in the classroom, why rules are needed, and rules and rights in school and home
Science
- Observing, discussing, recording, conducting experiments, drawing conclusions, organizing data, interpreting and summarizing data, and communicating ideas using the scientific method
- Observing and expanding awareness of weather and its effect on our daily lives
- Exploring similarities and differences between different kinds of living things on earth, e.g., plants and animals
- Discovering most organisms have basic needs such as food, water, air, space, and shelter
- Expanding student awareness of sound and light through our five senses
Math
- Reading, writing, and counting numerals 1-100
- Adding and subtracting one and two digit numbers
- Telling time on a clock: hours, half hours
- Counting money: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters
- Recognizing parts of a whole (fractions), halves (1/2), thirds (1/3), fourth (1/4)
- Using bar and picture graphs
Physical Education
- Understanding change of direction in running in low organized games
- Understanding cooperative play when using the parachute
- Understanding simple dance routines from music
- Understanding throwing concepts with a ball and a Frisbee
- Understanding good sportsmanship in game situations
Library
- Listening and retelling simple stories
- Choosing books that are of interest and appropriate to grade and reading level
- Understanding books are located in the library by author and subject areas
- Demonstrating the ability to locate books of interest
- Showing responsibility by the care and return of library materials
Health Education
- Learning how the body fights germs and preventing the spread of diseases
- Exploring positive and negative emotions and making friends
- Exploring safety rules for medicines, other drugs, and alcohol
- Learning how to keep the body safe and to maintain daily routines of personal hygiene
- Practicing refusal skills while respecting self and others, and identifying resources to turn to for assistance
- Identifying body parts and functions (hearts, lungs, teeth, five senses, brain, skin, ears)
Music
- Building a singing repertoire of age appropriate rote songs (seasonal, patriotic, theme-related, etc.)
- Developing listening skills using a variety of music
- Participating in a variety of rhythmic activities (movement songs, dancing, playing of rhythm instruments)
- Demontrating understanding of "beta" and "rhythm"
- Developing music reading skills using simple melodic and rhythmic patterns (2-line staff, quarter notes, rests, "Do Re Me," etc.)
Art
- Identifying free and basic geometric shapes and building 2-D designs, patterns, or pictures with them
- Developing skill of identifying the visual elements: line, shape, color, texture and use them in their art work
- Developing an art vocabulary with works such as collage, print, symmetry
- Identifying patterns, symbols, and how they have meaning in their art work
- Acquiring basic skills in drawing, painting, techniques, printmaking, weaving and other 2-D art and beginning basic understanding of 3-D artworks-sculpture (paper, collage) and working with clay as a 3-D material
- Creating artwork that is imaginary, functional or realistic as well as seasonal or holiday artwork
- Seeing the relationship of art and math, art and science, art and nature as well as using art to enhance classroom themes
