Below is the Core Curriculum for the 6th Grade.

Language Arts

  • Reading folk literature, novels, short stories, plays, poems, and non-fiction
  • Writing activities include: responding to literature, writing reports, letters, poetry, and fiction writing for specific purposes
  • Studying vocabulary, parts of speech, spelling, sentence structure
  • Identifying plot, setting, character, theme, conflict, literary techniques

Social Studies

  • Studying Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East
  • Learning geographical features
  • Understanding the interdependence of all nations, including their economic and political systems
  • Learning the major religions of the world and their influence on each other 

Science

  • Understanding cells, genetics, adaptations, ecology
  • Studying astronomy, paleontology, plate tectonics, meteorology
  • Studying water, electrical, and manufacturing systems
  • Understanding scientific method/lab safety and procedures
  • Applying technology to science

Math

  • Number concepts: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • Statistics and probablility: studying mean, median, mode, interpreting and creating graphs
  • Ratio, proportion, and percent: studying scale drawings, percent of a number, equivalents
  • Algebra: graphing integers and tranformations; solving equations
  • Geometry and measurement: studying perimeter, area, and volume of quadrilaterals, triangles, circles, prisms

Physical Education

  • Developing necessary skills to establish and maintain physical fitness
  • Acquiring the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment
  • Understanding and using personal and community resources
  • Demonstrating responsible personal and social behavior
  • Activities include: soccer, speedball, football, fitness, basketball, floor hockey, gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, lacrosse, softball, cooperative games, dance

Library

  • Listening to appreciate and evaluate a variety of literary styles and techniques
  • Continuing to explore the depth of research materials available including online resources
  • Understanding the Dewey Decimal System as the basis for library organization around the world
  • Achieving independence in finding library materials by subject, author and title 

Art

  • Journal: using the format of the book as an art portfolio
  • Composition: utilizing visual techniques to create depth
  • Color: understanding the concepts involved in mixing color
  • Sculpture: understanding the basic elements of three dimensional design

Instrumental Music

  • Listening and executing at a high level of accuracy, basic diatonic melodies in duple and triple meter
  • Playing at least seven major scales
  • Enhancing individual musicianship by improving concepts of tone, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and balance in the band
  • Expanding knowledge of music history, style, and theory through listening, rehearsing, practicing, and performing

Vocal Music

  • Studying the effects of music on everyday life
  • Studying technology and its effects on music
  • Understanding the functions of music in other cultures as compared with ours
