Language Arts
Listening and Speaking

Written Expression
- Introducing cursive writing (upper and lower case letters)
- Spelling frequently used words correctly
- Learning and using the "writing process" (prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading)
- Using correct punctuation
- Writing a personal narrative, fictional story, instructions, descriptive essay, persuasive essay, friendly letterĀ
Social Studies
- Understanding map skills including identifying oceans, continents, compass rose, symbols, and recognizing geography terms
- Learning about communities (rural, urban, and suburban) and the geography of rivers, deserts, and mountains
- Understanding rules in a community
- Developing an understanding of the government process in communities and nations
- Learning about current events
Science
- Learning process skills of hypothesizing, collecting data, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions
- Studying Life Science: life cycles of animals and plants and the roles of living things
- Studying Physical Science: water cycle and forms of energy
Math
- Identifying coins and value (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar) and counting money and making change to $1.00
- Telling time to the minute and calculating elapsed time
- Organizing and analyzing data using picture, line, and bar graphs, and using probability to predict outcomes
- Determining weight, length, capacity, and temperature using metric and customary systems
- Learing multiplication and division facts 0-9
- Identifying fractions and decimals, plane and solid geometric figures
Physical Education
- Understanding and achieving health and physical fitness
- Building on foundations of movement including spatial and body awareness
- Building on foundations of manipulation skills and applying these skills to age appropriate sport activities
- Learning about sport in our society including rules, skill acquisition, and competition
- Developing social skills through play and competition
Library
- Listening to foster literary understanding and appreciation and motivating children to read to themselves
- Using library organization to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction in library terms
- Recognizing the basic elements of information contained on a catalog card or in a computer database for any given book
- Beginning practice in finding library materials independently
Health Education
- Identifying emergencies and learning responsible strategies for handling them
- Exploring how germs are spread and how our body defends itself
- Understanding nutrients, responsible food choices, and food labels
- Examining the workings of the eye, eye problems, and proper protection
- Describing a positve attitude and its influence on personal values and goals
- Exploring the skeletal system, joints, and the benefits of regular exercise
Music
- Singing of three-part rounds, partner songs
- Recognizing musical symbols and directions
- Studying music of specific composers (Mozart, Saint-Saens)
- Learning about various musical forms ("theme and variations", "suite" , and "sonata")
- Identifying four-line staff, repeat sign, line and space, notes, scale
- Learning about families of instruments
- Learning about the concept of "meter"
Art
- Continuing to use geometric and free shapes, the visual elements, pattern, and observation to create 2-D and 3-D art work that is imaginary, realistic, or functional
- Continuing to obtain exposure to art work from other cultures, historical times, the relationship art has to other subject matters as well as classroom themes
- Exploring another form of puppet making, clay work, weaving and book binding
- Indentifying major works of art and artists
