Welcome to High School Physical Education! The arena of Coach Lampman & Collier
Physical Education is a course in which each student is educated in fitness concepts, sports, and activities. The knowledge learned is then applied through participation.
NYS Learning Standards for Physical Education The Catskill School District?s Physical Education Department recognizes and teaches to the standards put forth in 1996 by the NYS Education Department.
Standard One: Personal Health and Fitness Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health.
Standard Two: A Safe and Healthy Environment Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
Standard Three: Resource Management Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources.
Objectives 1. To develop each student?s fitness level (coordination, flexibility, strength, and endurance) to the highest-level possible. 2. To learn the rules and safety procedures of various sports and activities. 3. To learn the basic skills needed to perform various sports and activities. 4. To develop a sense of teamwork in both small and large groups. 5. To promote sportsmanship, fair play, and encouragement among classmates.
Scope First Quarter: soccer, flag football, speedball, fitness assessment, orienteering, tennis, fitness walking, President's Challenge Fitness Test(baseline assessment lab)
Second & Third Quarters: basketball, handball, volleyball, warm-up/fitness conditioning activities, adventure/initiatives, cardio-step/dance, weight training, floor hockey, badminton, new games/cooperative learning activity exploration (personal fitness training record-lab)(career opportunities in sport-lab)(nutrition lab)
Fourth Quarter: track and field, foreign games/sports, lacrosse, kayaking/canoeing, softball, ultimate frisbee, President's Challenge Fitness Test (lab final)(Track and Field Computer Lab)
Sequence For each scope the sequence is as follows: daily fitness component and a focus on individual fitness development general introduction to the sport/activity safety instruction sequential skill development explanation of rules and strategies
Grading A student will be graded on a daily basis. They may receive as many as 5 points or as few as 0 points each day. Listed below are the criteria to reach each point level:
0 points - student is asked to leave class for disciplinary reasons or absent from class (lessons, field trips, medical excuse etc. included) 1 point - student is unprepared and does not meet any of the lesson?s objectives 2 points - student is unprepared, but meets some of the lesson?s objectives 3 points - student is prepared and meets some of the lesson?s objectives 4 points - student is prepared and meets most of the lesson? s objectives 5 points - student is prepared and meets all of lesson?s objectives
Expectations The Catskill High School Physical Education Department has several expectations of its students. Although some of the expectations are administrative, such as being on time, being prepared for class, and completing the participation time, the departments? focus is on those expectations that bring quality to the Physical Education experience. Those expectations include a positive cooperative attitude, positive character/social interactions, quality effort and activity participation, and appropriate safety precautions.
