ART I (Studio In Art)

Teacher - Theresa Pine

In-Class Art

You will be working with a wide variety of mediums ? drawing pencils, colored pencils, various types of paint, clay, etc.  You should be completing approximately 4 projects in class each marking period.  If you are absent for any reason, you are responsible for finishing that project by coming in after school to complete it.

Art History

At the beginning of each in-class project, we will go over information about a particular artist or artists and you will be tested on it.  You will receive handouts with the art history information and we will go over it during class.  Each in-class project will relate to that artist.  For example, you will study about the ceramic artist Maria Martinez and terminology concerning working with clay.  I will demonstrate how to make a ceramic vessel and then you will make a clay vessel and glaze it.

Out-of-Class Art Projects

Every two weeks (on Thursday, unless it is a snow day or a holiday) an out-of-class project is due.  See the next page with more detailed information concerning out-of-class projects.

Sketchbook

You must obtain a SPIRAL bound sketchbook (no smaller then 8 X 10 inches and no bigger then 11 X 14 inches).  I will check and grade your sketchbook twice during the marking period (about every 4 weeks).  You should be working in your sketchbook for awhile every day.  If you have time at the end of class after you clean up, during your study hall, at home, etc., you should be sketching, drawing or painting in it.  You may want to include some poetry, song lyrics, or descriptive words along with your art work.  Remember, you should be doing some art work in your sketchbook on a daily basis (even if it is only for 10-15 minutes).  The art work in your sketchbook does not have to be completed drawings.  Your sketchbook will also be used in class for various art work.  For example, to practice shading, textures, etc.

In June, there will be a final exam in this class.  Half of your grade (worth 50 points) will be a painting/drawing and half of your grade (worth 50 points) will be on art history and art terminology.

Report Card Grade is based on the following:

  • In-class projects (approximately 4 per marking period)
  • Art history tests ( ?                      ?   ?         ?            ?  )
  • Sketchbook ? 2 grades per marking period (every 5 weeks)
  • Out-of-class projects (due every 2 weeks)

Final Average in June ?

  • 4 Report card grades
  • 1 Final exam grade

Studio In Art requires concentration, discipline, maturity, the ability to follow directions, to work independently as well as with others, and to complete all assignments on time.  This is a QUIET, ART working environment.  Appropriate school and classroom behavior is in effect at all times.

If you would like to work on any of the above assignments, discuss your grade, etc, I am available to meet with you after school in the Art room.
