French or Spanish Level I

Grades 9-12

  • Listening: understanding basic vocabulary used in everyday conversation
  • Speaking: expressing simple ideas and needs
  • Reading: understanding the main idea of simple passages
  • Writing: expressing basic topics in simple sentences
  • Culture: developing appreciation and awareness of diverse cultural traits and patterns

French or Spanish Level II

Grades 9-12

This is the second year of foreign language for students who have successfully completed the first year of language study.

  • Listening: understanding conversation and short passages with familiar and unfamiliar vocabulary
  • Speaking: expressing ideas about various topics and conversing in everyday situations
  • Reading: understanding the the concepts of intermediate reading
  • Writing: composing brief notes or messages about everyday situations in more complex sentence structure
  • Culture: enhancing cultural awareness

French or Spanish Level III

Grades 10-12

At the completion of Level III, students take the Comprehensive New York State Regents Examination.

  • Listening: understanding and comprehending passages and conversations
  • Speaking: exhibiting spontaneity in conversation and selecting appropriate vocabulary
  • Reading: reading and comprehending materials written at a more advanced level
  • Writing: composing short notes, simple letters, and short reports
  • Culture: demonstrating a greater knowledge of cultural traits and patterns

French or Spanish Level IV and V

Grades 11-12

Students have the opportunity to earn college credit upon the successful completion of these courses (two years).

  • Listening: Understanding the spoken language as used in a variety of settings
  • Speaking: engaging in fluent discussions
  • Reading: comprehending the content of texts
  • Writing: writing multi-paragraphed essays, journals, and projects
  • Culture: investigating, in-depth varied topics in art, literature and music
