On July 1, A team from the Catskill Elementary School were invited to present at a NYS Reading Conference on using vocabulary throughout the curriculum to increase students’ reading comprehension skills. Implementation of a “Word Conscious Classroom” and a “Word Conscious School” to support the important literacy goal was presented. Evaluations from participants were overwhelmingly positive of the work of presenters: Marian Andrews, CES Literacy Coordinator, Linda Szakmary, 2nd grade teacher, and Building Coaches, Christina Fabbie and Tenaya Maestri. 98% of attendees cited the presentation as “the best workshop in two days…filled with practical ideas for classroom teachers.” Two noted researchers, Dr. Corinne Eisenhart from the Florida Center of Reading Research, and Dr. Maureen Ruby from the University of Connecticut attended the workshop and expressed interest of working with CES staff in the upcoming school year.
